最初的Century typeface是由Linn Boyd Benton与T. L，DeVinne于1894年共同为《Century Magazine》制作。与之前使用的字体相比，Century是一款更黑、更易读的字体。Monotype Century是使用Monotype机器与其后续技术合成的。<br><br>
Linn Boyd Benton的儿子Morris Fuller Benton后来从1900年开始为American Type Founders铸造厂设计Century Expanded以及其他Century变体，以满足当时的印刷联盟标准。Century Expanded中的“expansion”是沿着垂直面展开的。Century Expanded是一款非常有用的字体家族，可用于杂志、书籍、演示文稿和时事新闻中的文本设置。

The first Century typeface was cut in 1894 by Linn Boyd Benton in conjunction with T. L, DeVinne for Century Magazine. Century was a blacker, more readable face than the types previously used; Monotype Century was created for composition with the Monotype machine and subsequent technologies._x000D_

Linn Boyd Benton’s son Morris Fuller Benton later designed Century Expanded, as well as other Century variants, from 1900 for the American Type Founders foundry, in order to meet the Typographical Union Standard of the day. The "expansion" in Century Expanded was along the vertical plane. Century Expanded is a useful font family for text setting in magazines, books, presentations and newsletters.
